Indian Meal Moth

Indian meal moths (Plodia interpunctella) are the most common pantry pests. Adult meal moths are about a half-inch in length and have bi-colored wings that set them apart from clothes moths and live long enough to mate, usually about a week. The larvae become whitish caterpillars with brown heads that hatch and feed in cupboards for weeks and even months, depending on the tempertarure. The caterpillars spin loose cocoons in cupboard corners and after several weeks emerge as adult moths. In warm climates, the entire life cycle can take six to eight weeks, although in cooler conditions it can take up to six months.
Indian meal moths eat a wide variety of foods. Commonly infested foods include cereal, cornmeal, flour, spices, powdered milk, dired frutis, nuts and even bird seed. You can often find webbing, small caterpillars and fine gritty material, which is insect waste in infested food items.

The only way to control this kitchen pest is to inspect all food products, throw out contaminated food, especially those in boxes and loosely sealed containers along with cleaning cupboards and pantry areas thoroughly. Then, have it professionally treated by a licensed pest control professional.
